Some further progress on the open source version of tOKo :-). Previously, I happily announced a little addition to tOKo which converts a Movable Type archive to tOKo and invited others to make their weblog available (also in other formats). Several people have done so, and they are now in the possession of a tOKo screendump of their weblog. Piers Young even shares his screendump with the blogosphere.
Matt Mower put his entire blog online and, given that it is too early to go cycling, tOKo can process that too. In fact, Matt's format was so easy to do, I had some spare time left to turn my list of Bloglines subscriptions upside down and tOKo also does all of those. These include: RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom 0.3 formats.
While implementing these conversions I started wondering about two things. The first is related to the multitude of formats (and local extensions to these formats by blogging engines). Perhaps I should not say what I think about this. The second is related to how topics (categories, tags, etc.) end up in a weblog dump or a feed. I feel that the solution selected by Movable Type makes most sense: make a distinction between coarse topic and detailed keywords assigned to posts. For example, some people might assign weblog research as a topic which they use frequently and anjoanjewierden (some do, unbelievable isn't it :-)) as a keyword that assists in finding specific entries. Unfortunately, only Movable Type supports this practice and the other formats hardly have support to even categorise posts.
That said, I'll get back to a "cheeky post" by Ton Zijlstra:
On a study day of the METIS project yesterday, I was pleased to hear that turning the tools Anjo build into something that can be used by the community at large is now a planned deliverable.
This is true, perhaps not so cheeky afterall. Creating an open source version of tOKo is work, and so is the weblog research we are doing. It somehow feels like fun :-). (Before the project manager starts jumping up-and-down, making tOKo usable for bloggers is not work, that's a hobby.).
You got a lot of spare time, cause you go very often cycling.
