Yesterday, I gave a 30 minute talk as part of our research meetings titled Weblogs for Research(ers). Three Ph.D. students, who have just started, also gave a 10 minute talk on their research plans. The latter was something we tried for the first time, and I think it worked out rather well. All three had no problem getting their messages across.
The department were I work is now called Human Computer Studies Laboratory and is part of the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam. As suggested earlier weblogs do not seem to have gained full acceptance in the academic community. None of my 30+ colleagues has a weblog, and they also do not read mine (this may change!).
The presentation was about two intertwined topics: (1) Is it interesting for a researcher to have a weblog and (2) Is it interesting to do weblog research. I link to the slides with some reluctance. Slides are not the only part of a presentation and my PowerPoint skills are next to zero. For those who agree, here are the two last conclusions:
- Tempting to continue my own weblog research
- If others have better ideas than I have, and some do, I gladly return to my role as supporting others to do their weblog research
Hi Anjo,
encouraged by your inspiring talk at the Lab, I decided to finally take a shot at blogging. If it doesn't work out, at least I've taken a look at the mechanics behind Blogging.
I installed a trackback service at my blog-provider, so by trackbacking to this article I'm trying this out. Hope it worked.

That worked! I tried to trackback to you, that did not work.
