Do I know little about communication science, and as I found out today students of communication science know little about weblogs. During a guest lecture for communication science students at the University of Twente, I asked the simple question: "Does anybody of you have a weblog?" Zilch, amazing. Although, think again, ask the average computer science student in our department: "Do you write computer programs?" Oh well, the world is getting more and more blurred.
The lecture itself went fine and I think the students liked the weblog research examples featured (I did not tell them that weblogs are about communication, hope they inferred that). The second day of my Christmas holidays is over and once I have turned the book voucher into paper the remainder should not be difficult :-)
"Weblogs are about communication" - OK!
But they are, too, about "expression", "representation", "world-structuring", "self-communication", "self-reference"... these are also interesting dimensions of blogs and of sign production in general.
