In the Netherlands there is a large distinction between an "academic" title (from a University) and an "engineering" title (from a Technical High School). A commission has studied the issue and they came to the striking conclusion that academics can think and engineers can make things. What we really need, the commission says, is people who can think and produce things. I'm not sure that giving academics and engineers the same title, as the commission suggests, solves the problem, but it certainly appears they are thinking and working in the right direction.
Personally I'm somewhat confused as to were I fit, as illustrated by the following riddle:
I'm not an academic, but I do research.
I'm not a programmer, but I do program.
I'm not a blogger, but I do blog.
I'm not a manager, but I do manage.
